  1. ---------> WHAT IS SS1?
  2. The SS1 package provides the following functions:
  3.  
  4.      - Editor and Wordprocessor.
  5.      - File and Directory browser.
  6.      - List/Data Manager.
  7.      - Communications to other computers.
  8.      - Spreadsheet.
  9.  
  10. SS1 also provides "popup" aids that can be used from anywhere in SS1. These
  11. aids include a calculator, a spelling aid, an aid for graphing data, a
  12. files/directory aid, and an aid for "learning" keys.
  13.  
  14. Other features include context sensitive help, job suspend and resume,
  15. keyboard macros and learn keys, a consistent and easy to learn user
  16. interface, and much more.
  17.  
  18. -----> WHATS IS THE EVALUATION COPY?
  19. This is an evaluation copy of SS1.  It is intended to allow you "try
  20. before you buy".
  21.  
  22. The evaluation copy is a FULLY FUNCTIONAL version of SS1 except for the
  23. following minor omissions:
  24.  
  25.    - The document has been abreviated to about half of its normal size.
  26.  
  27.    - The setup utility (which allows you to customize screen colors,
  28.      customize the communication module, and customize printer support)
  29.      has been omitted.
  30.  
  31.    - The spelling aid dictionary file has been omitted.
  32.  
  33. The omissions allow SS1 and the documention to fit on two floppy disks,
  34. and give you some additional incentive to purchase the package.
  35.  
  36. ------> WHY SHOULD I BUY SS1?

  78.    - Make copies of SS1 for your own use or to give to your friends.

  80.    - Use the evaluation copy in your personal or business work to decide
  81.      if you want to purchase SS1.

  84.    - Sell SS1 to anyone.

  94. ----> GETTING STARTED
  95. If you want to just jump in and try SS1, put diskette 1 in your default
  96. drive, and type ss1.  Try the File Manager  (choice "F" on the menu) for
  97. something that is very quick and easy to learn.
  98.  
  99. A more deliberate installation process goes like this:
  100.  
  101. The evaluation copy of SS1 comes on two diskettes.  The first diskette
  102. contains all of the files needed to run SS1.  The second diskette
  103. contains the evaluation copy document, printer support files, and
  104. communication files for various terminals.
  105.  
  106. Step 1: Printer Setup. (optional)
  107. SS1 provides taylored support for many common printers. If you don't perform
  108. this step SS1 will use a default set of print parameters, which will
  109. probably work on your printer, but will not take best advantage of it.
  110. Follow the steps below if you want SS1 to be able to take maximum advantage
  111. of your printer:
  112.  
  113. 1. Look through the list of supported printers in appendix 3, and find the
  114.    name of the printer pattern file for your printer.
  115.  
  116. 2. Place diskette 2 disk in drive B: and diskette 1 in drive A:, then
  117.    issue this command:
  118.  
  119.    COPY B:EPSON.PRN  A:SS1.PRN
  120.    Where in this example it is assumed that you have an EPSON printer.
  121.  
  122. If you don't find a file for your printer, or you want to do further
  123. customization, then you will want to run the printer setup portion of the
  124. SETUP utility.
  125. NOTE: THE SETUP UTILITY IS NOT PROVIDED IN THE EVALUATION COPY IN ORDER
  126. TO SAVE DISK SPACE.

  128. Step 2: Printing the manual.
  129. The documentation for the SS1 evaluation copy is located on diskette 2
  130. in a subdirectory called \DOC.  Each chapter is in a separate file.
  131. The manual should be printed by using the SS1 print utility in order to
  132. get proper pagination and formating.  To print the document:
  133.  
  134. 1. insert diskette 1 in drive A:, with A: as the default drive. Turn your
  135.    printer on.
  136.  
  137. 2. Type ss1 to start the ss1 program.
  138.  
  139. 3. Select the "Print" menu choice by typing "P".
  140.  
  141. 4. Insert diskette 2 in the A: drive.
  142.  
  143. 5. You will then be asked for a file name.
  144.       To print the entire document (about 90 pages), enter
  145.       \DOC\ALL.DOC.
  146.  
  147.       To print a single chapter, enter the filename for that chapter --
  148.       for example, to print the editor chapter, enter \DOC\EDIT.DOC.
  149.  
  150. 6. Carriage return through the rest of the inputs.

  153. and the Install appendix.  These cover how to install SS1 on a hard disk,
  154. and how to optomize for speed or disk space.

  167. Some commonly asked questions are listed below:
  168.  
  169. -  The eXecute option on shift F9 and in the file manger keep ss1 in memory
  170.    while a DOS command is run.  To use this feature your PC must have at
  171.    least 448K of memory (after subtracting for memory used by ram disks and
  172.    memory resident utilities) plus the amount of memory needed to run the
  173.    DOS command.
  174.  
  175. -  The real spell check dictionary (SS1.S) is on the utility disk due to
  176.    disk space limitations.  If you use this feature often move one of the
  177.    applications to a second disk and place the dictionary on the main disk.

  180. -  You must copy the correct printer file from the utility disk to support
  181.    any special features of your printer.  See appendix 1.
  182.  
  183. -  You must copy the correct communications configuration file from the
  184.    utility disk to support the terminal you want to emulate (copy tty.cfg
  185.    if you don't want to emulate a particular terminal).  See page 5-6.

  187. -  If you are using an IBM PC, and see SNOW on the screen - see page 1-10.
  188.  
  189. -  An "insufficient memory" message when you attempt to run SS1 means that
  190.    there is not enough memory remaining to run SS1. SS1 will run (and is
  191.    routinely used) on 256KB systems, but if you have installed memory resident
  192.    programs (eg keyboard macro utilities), optional device drivers, or RAM
  193.    disks, there may not be enough memory left to run SS1. The solution is to
  194.    remove some of the memory resident software, or install more memory.
